Io e il mio gatto Pa...I and Pangur Ban, my cat,
'Tis a like task we are at;
Hunting mice is his delight,
Hunting words I sit all night.
Better far than praise of men
'Tis to sit with book and pen;
Pangur bears me no ill will;
He, too, plies his simple skill.
'Tis a merry thing to see
At our task how glad are we,
When at home we sit and find
Entertainment to our mind.
Oftentimes a mouse will stray
Into the hero Pangur's way;
Oftentimes my keen thought set
Takes a meaning in its net.
'Gainst the wall he sets his eye
Full and fierce and sharp and sly;
'Gainst the wall of knowledge I
All my little wisdom try.
When a mouse darts from its den.
O how glad is Pangur then!
O what gladness do I prove
When I solve the doubts I love!
So in peace our tasks we ply,
Pangur Ban, my cat and I;
In our arts we find our bliss,
I have mine, and he has his.
Practice every day has made
Pangur perfect in his trade ;
I get wisdom day and night,
Turning Darkness into light.'

Io ed il mio gatto Pangur Ban
lo stesso compito eseguiam:
lui a caccia di topi lieto corre intorno
io a caccia di parole sto seduto notte e giorno.
E' molto meglio di ogni onore ricevuto
con libro e penna starmene seduto;
rancor verso di me Pangur certo non ha,
e del suo semplice mestier buon uso fa.
Un topo smarrendosi finisce spesso
tra i piedi dell'eroico Pangur messo;
spesso il mio pensier si tende
ed un significato nella sua rete prende.
Gli occhi posa lui contro il muro
grande, grosso, scaltro e sicuro;
contro il muro del saper io metterò
a dura prova quel poco che sò.
Il costante allenamento ha fatto
di Pangur un perfetto gatto;
notte e giorno sapienza io apprendo
in luce l'oscurità volgendo.
Onu: l'AIDS ha infettato ormai 40 milioni di persone.
The New York Times > Health > AIDS Infections Reach Record High, U.N. Says: "An estimated 39.4 million people are living with the virus, up from 38.1 million in 2003, the United Nations said in issuing its annual report on AIDS in advance of World AIDS Day on Dec. 1.
The report focused on women, who make up nearly half of infected adults. The steepest increases in this group over the last two years have occurred in East Asia, followed by Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
In Africa, the most heavily affected continent, women account for nearly 60 percent of infected people.
The increasingly female face of H.I.V. in the world 'has major implications' because it means that treatment and prevention programs must focus on women if the world wants to stop the epidemic, said Dr. Peter Piot, the director of the United Nations AIDS program in Geneva."
L'economia israeliana in crisi come quella palestinese.
The New York Times > International > Middle East > Israeli and Palestinian Poverty Rising, Reports Say: "More than 22 percent of Israelis were living in poverty in 2003, up more than a percentage point from a year earlier and in keeping with the trend of the past few years, according to a report by Israel's National Insurance Institute.
'Israel is becoming poorer and poorer,' said Yigal Ben Shalom, director of the institute, a government body.
The poverty bar is set much higher in Israel, at about $400 a month for an individual, and around $1,000 a month for a family of four.
Jerusalem is the poorest Israeli city, with one-third of the residents living in poverty, the report noted. The city has been hit particularly hard in recent years. Jerusalem has suffered more suicide bombings than any other city. In addition, it relies heavily on tourism, which dropped dramatically in the first two years of the fighting, though it has been making a comeback.
While the Palestinian economy is treading water, the Israeli government says the Israeli economy is growing at close to 4 percent this year, its best showing since the late 1990's"
Banca Mondiale: l'economia palestinese e' in crisi.
BBC NEWS | Business | Palestinian economy in decline: "Despite a short-lived increase in Palestinian jobs in 2003, the economy is performing well below its potential, said a World Bank report.
Unemployment stood at 25%, compared with 10% before the uprising against Israeli occupation four years ago.
Young people are particularly hard hit with 37% out of work, compared with 14% four years ago.
But 104,000 new jobs were created last year during a brief easing of violence and border closures.
However, during the first half of this year, the Palestinian economy lost more than 22,000 jobs.
Last year's growth rate of 6% can also be attributed to this temporary gap in violence, the report said."
Sono i cattolici i piu' perseguitati dagli abusi settari.
BBC NEWS | UK | Scotland | Church concern at bigotry report: "The Catholic Church in Scotland has expressed dismay at figures showing that its members were more likely to suffer sectarian abuse.
A Crown Office study of prosecutions under new anti-sectarianism legislation found that in 63% of cases the victims were Catholic.
This compared with 29% of victims who were Protestants, 1% who were Jews and 1% targeted because they were Muslim.
MSPs said hostility existed on all sides and called for better education.
The Crown Office carried out a study into prosecutions in June to December 2003, following the introduction of Section 74 of the Criminal Justice (Scotland) Act 2003.

The New York Times > International > Asia Pacific > China Widens Economic Role in Latin America: "Driven by one the largest and most sustained economic expansions in history, and facing bottlenecks and shortages in Asia, China is increasingly turning to South America as a supplier. It is busy buying huge quantities of iron ore, bauxite, soybeans, timber, zinc and manganese in Brazil. It is vying for tin in Bolivia, oil in Venezuela and copper here in Chile, where last month it displaced the United States as the leading market for Chilean exports.
While President Bush is spending the weekend here for the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, President Hu Jintao of China is here in the midst of a two-week visit to Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Cuba. In the course of it, he has announced more than $30 billion in new investments and signed long-term contracts that will guarantee China supplies of the vital materials it needs for its factories."
GIORNALE.IT - economy: "Bill Gates in Italia non sarebbe mai esistito: parola di ministro
"
